Yalumba Wines: Barossa Shiraz, Eden Valley Viognier and the Y Series
Yalumba takes its name from a word believed to come from the Peramangk language, meaning "all the country around". Since 1849 the family has made wine at Angaston in the Barossa, and today its wines reach from the Y Series to Shiraz and Grenache grown on vines planted in the 1800s.
Our Yalumba collection leans towards red wine, from Barossa Shiraz to Coonawarra Cabernet, and adds a fine line of white wine, from Eden Valley Viognier and Chardonnay to the Y Series whites.
Who Owns Yalumba?
Yalumba is owned by the Hill-Smith family, who have owned and run the winery for more than 175 years and call it Australia's oldest family owned winery. Robert Hill-Smith is the fifth generation proprietor, and Jessica and Lucy Hill-Smith have joined as the sixth generation.
The story began when Samuel Smith, an English migrant, arrived in South Australia in 1847 and settled at Angaston, where he planted the first Yalumba vines in 1849. Today the Yalumba winery and its Wine Room are on Eden Valley Road in Angaston.
The family also runs its own cooperage, which Yalumba describes as the only operational on-site winery cooperage in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Yalumba Ranges We Stock
Yalumba Y Series
The Y Series brings the widest choice of varieties to our Yalumba collection. Whites include Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Chardonnay and Viognier, the reds run from Merlot and Tempranillo to Shiraz, Shiraz Viognier and Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Y Series Cuvée adds a sparkling.
Samuel's Collection
Yalumba's Samuel's Collection celebrates founder Samuel Smith. From the Barossa come a rich, modern Shiraz, a Shiraz Cabernet, a light and highly aromatic Bush Vine Grenache and a Grenache Rosé from newly established vineyards.
From the Eden Valley come a fresh, zesty Chardonnay from a family estate vineyard 545 metres above sea level, a Viognier and a Roussanne, which Yalumba counts among the very few single variety Roussannes in Australia.
Distinguished Sites and Galway Vintage Shiraz
Yalumba's Distinguished Sites wines each capture one special place. Vine Vale Grenache comes from old, dry grown vines in the tiny Vine Vale subregion of the Barossa Valley, and Vine Vale Grenache Blanc is grown among them.
The Paradox Shiraz, from the warmest parts of the northern Barossa, is softer and more savoury than you might expect. From the Eden Valley high country come the Hand Picked Shiraz Viognier and FDR1A, whose name stands for Fine Dry Red.
Galway Vintage Shiraz, which Yalumba calls a crowd favourite, is a rich, generous and full flavoured Barossa Shiraz drawn from vineyards throughout the region.
The Signature, The Octavius and Old Vine Shiraz
The Signature is Yalumba's classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, a style the family calls The Great Australian Red. Each vintage honours a person whose story is part of Yalumba's, named as the Signatory of that release.
For Yalumba Shiraz from old vines, The Octavius draws on plantings that reach back to 1854 and is matured partly in 100 litre octave barrels made in Yalumba's cooperage. The Steeple Shiraz comes from a single vineyard at Light Pass planted in 1919.
The Tri-Centenary Grenache is hand picked from old bush vines planted in 1889. To keep such claims honest, Yalumba created its Old Vine Charter in 2007, which defines an Old Vine as at least 35 years of age and an Ancestor Vine as 125 years or more.
Before Andrew Quin became Chief Winemaker at Hentley Farm, he worked with Yalumba's premium red wines, so fans of both houses can enjoy comparing their Barossa reds.
Coonawarra Cabernet: The Menzies, The Cigar and Sanctum
In Coonawarra, Yalumba's Menzies Estate vineyard lies on the famous terra rossa soil over limestone. The Cigar is named after the region's cigar shaped strip of red soil, and Sanctum is a modern take on a regional stalwart.
The Menzies is a classic, full bodied Cabernet Sauvignon named after Sir Robert Menzies, who in 1965 called the 1961 Yalumba Galway Vintage Special Reserve Claret "the finest Australian red I have ever tasted".
The Virgilius and Yalumba Viognier
Robert Hill-Smith pioneered Viognier in Australia. In 1980, with help from the Yalumba nursery, the first commercial Viognier vines in Australia were planted on a neighbour's Eden Valley vineyard.
The Virgilius, Yalumba's flagship white wine, is still crafted from old vine Viognier selected from that site.
