Santorini, the dramatic volcanic island, is Greece's most famous wine region, home to bone dry, mineral Assyrtiko grown in ancient basket trained vines.

In the north, Naoussa in Macedonia is the kingdom of Xinomavro, making structured, age worthy reds often likened to Barolo, while Nemea in the Peloponnese is the home of smooth, generous Agiorgitiko.

Further afield, sun soaked Crete revives ancient island grapes, and cool mountain regions across the mainland craft fresh, aromatic whites and elegant reds.

How to Serve Greek Wine

Serve crisp Greek whites well chilled, around 8 to 10 degrees, and reds at cool room temperature, around 16 to 18 degrees. Structured Xinomavro loves time to breathe.

Greek wine was made for Mediterranean food. Assyrtiko is a dream with grilled fish, calamari and a Greek salad, while Xinomavro loves slow cooked lamb and tomato based dishes.
