Pikes Wines: Clare Valley Riesling, Luccio Sangiovese and Shiraz

In Polish Hill River, an easterly corner of the Clare Valley, the Pike family farms gently rolling slopes over slate. It is the only sub region of the Clare with a uniform slate subsoil, and the home of Pikes Riesling, such as the Traditionale with its lime, citrus blossom and fine, chalky minerality.

Pikes is known above all for Riesling, yet the estate grows around 20 grape varieties, from Sangiovese and Fiano to Shiraz and Cabernet.

Who Owns Pikes Wines?

Pikes is a family business. Andrew and Cathy Pike were founding partners of Pikes Wines in 1984, along with Andrew's brother Neil, and although they stepped back from day-to-day operations in 2022, they remain majority shareholders and directors.

Their sons followed them into the business, and today Jamie Pike leads the Pikes Group as Managing Director. The family has been making drinks in South Australia since 1886, when work began on the Pikes Dorset Brewery.

The wine story started in 1984, when the family bought land in the heart of Polish Hill River. A year later Pikes released its first Polish Hill River Riesling and opened its first cellar door.
