Vegan Wine: Vegan Friendly Reds, Whites, Rosé & Sparkling for Every Table
Good wine should welcome everyone to the table. Our vegan wine collection brings together vegan friendly reds, whites, rosé and sparkling, so you can pour with a clear conscience, whether it is a weeknight dinner, a barbecue or a celebration.
What Is Vegan Wine?
Vegan wine is wine made without any animal products. Grapes are vegan by nature, but before bottling many winemakers clarify their wine in a step called fining, and that is where animal products most often come in.
Vegan friendly winemakers use alternatives such as bentonite clay, plant proteins from peas or potatoes, or the synthetic fining agent PVPP. Some skip fining altogether and bottle their wine unfined.
Why Isn't All Wine Vegan?
The short answer is fining. Young wine can contain proteins that may later turn it hazy, and phenolic compounds that can taste harsh or bitter. Fining agents bind to these compounds so they settle out and can be removed.
Traditional fining agents include egg white, milk protein, gelatine and isinglass, which comes from fish. Most of the agent settles out before bottling, so little or none ends up in the glass. Because the wine has been treated with an animal product, though, it is generally not considered vegan.
Vegan Red, White and Rosé Wine in Our Range
Vegan red wine is the largest part of the collection, led by Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Grenache. Many come from South Australia, from the Barossa Valley to the vineyards of Langhorne Creek.
For vegan white wine, look for crisp Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough and the Adelaide Hills, Chardonnay and Eden Valley Riesling. Our vegan rosé ranges from pale and dry to juicy Grenache styles.
Celebrating? The range also includes vegan sparkling wine, from Tasmanian bubbles to vegan Prosecco from the Adelaide Hills and Victoria's High Country.
Vegan Friendly Wine Brands
Several Australian producers make most or all of their wines vegan friendly. In our range you will find Yalumba from the Barossa and Pewsey Vale from the Eden Valley, both of which describe their wines as vegan friendly.
Bremerton from Langhorne Creek and Farm Hand from the Riverland add more vegan friendly choices to our range.
From New Zealand, ARA and Yealands bring vegan Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir from Marlborough.
Vegan Wine Questions, Answered
Is red wine vegan?
Not always. Red wine is traditionally fined with egg white to soften harsh tannins, so a red is only vegan when the winemaker uses a plant based or mineral agent, or no fining at all.
How can I tell if a wine is vegan?
Look for a vegan statement or certification on the label, or check the producer's details. Every wine in this collection is listed as vegan friendly, so you can shop without guesswork.
Is vegan wine also organic?
Not necessarily. Vegan is about how a wine is clarified, while organic is about how the grapes are grown. Plenty of wines are both, and you can explore them in our organic wine collection.
Does vegan wine taste different?
Vegan wine is made from the same grapes in the same way, only the fining agent changes. Fining is mainly about clarity, stability and softening harsh tannins.
Careful winemakers fine as lightly as they can, because heavy fining can strip out some flavour and body. So choose by grape, region and style, just as you would with any other wine.
