Margaret River Wines: Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Semillon Sauvignon Blanc from Western Australia

Tall karri forests, surf beaches and a cool breeze off the ocean: few Australian wine regions are as beautiful as this corner of the south west. It grows only a small share of the country's grapes, yet the wines of Margaret River, above all Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, are among the most admired Australia makes.

What Makes Margaret River Wine So Special?

Margaret River lies in the far south west of Western Australia, about three hours' drive south of Perth. The region runs along a narrow strip of land between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin, with the ocean on three sides.

That maritime climate brings mild temperatures, dry summers and remarkably consistent vintages. The first modern commercial vineyard was planted at Vasse Felix in 1967, after agronomist Dr John Gladstones compared the region's climate with Bordeaux. Pioneers such as Cape Mentelle and Cullen followed within a few years.

Our range covers every style the region is loved for. White wine makes up the largest share, led by Chardonnay, closely followed by Margaret River red wine such as Cabernet Sauvignon and its blends. Planning a trip? Read our guide to the Margaret River wine region.
