Barolo DOCG and Barolo Riserva

A Barolo Riserva is aged for at least 62 months, more than five years, before it leaves the cellar. The extra time softens Nebbiolo's firm tannins and builds savoury notes of leather, dried roses and truffle.

More than a third of our Barolo wines are Riserva, and several come from named vineyard sites such as Bricco Ambrogio, Cerequio and Rocchettevino.

Back Vintage Barolo

Great Barolo needs time, and few buyers have the patience or the cellar to wait. That is why our range includes back vintage releases from Porta Rossa, with Barolo Riserva from vintages as far back as 1996. These mature bottles already show the dried fruit, earthy and floral complexity that only age brings.

Vintage matters in Barolo. Warm years give riper, more generous wines, while cooler years are more structured and need longer in the cellar, which is why collectors check a Barolo vintage chart before they buy.

The Villages of Barolo

Barolo comes from eleven villages, and the soil changes the style. La Morra and the village of Barolo itself sit on softer Tortonian soils that give perfumed, elegant wines, which is where Michele Chiarlo's Tortoniano takes its name.

Serralunga d'Alba and Monforte d'Alba have older, poorer soils that produce more powerful and structured Barolo built for long ageing.

Serving and Food Pairing

Serve Barolo at 16 to 18 degrees in a large glass, and decant younger wines for an hour or two. It is made for rich food: slow braised beef, mushroom risotto, egg pasta with shaved truffle or a hard, aged cheese.

How long can you keep Barolo?

Good Barolo usually opens up after eight to ten years, and the finest examples can age for 20 to 30 years. Store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place with a steady temperature.

What is the difference between Barolo and Barbaresco?

Both are made from Nebbiolo in the Langhe. Barbaresco comes from a smaller area nearby, needs less time before release and is often softer when young, while Barolo is generally more powerful and longer lived.

Is Barolo the same as Nebbiolo?

Barolo is made only from Nebbiolo, but not all Nebbiolo is Barolo. The name belongs to wines from the Barolo DOCG in Piedmont, while Nebbiolo from other areas or from Australia is labelled differently.

Why is Barolo so expensive?

The Barolo area is small, Nebbiolo is a late ripening grape with modest yields, and every bottle ages for at least 38 months before release. Riserva and single vineyard wines are made in even smaller amounts.
