Wirra Wirra Wines: Church Block, McLaren Vale Shiraz and Adelaide Hills Whites

At Wirra Wirra, the wine names come with stories. Robert Strangways Wigley established it in McLaren Vale in 1894, and the late Greg Trott rebuilt it from ruins in the late 1960s. Many of the wine names still tell his tales.

Today Chief Winemaker Emma Wood aims for generous, elegant and fresh red wines from McLaren Vale fruit, while the whites in our range come from the cooler Adelaide Hills.

What Is Wirra Wirra Church Block?

Church Block is the first wine Greg Trott produced under the Wirra Wirra label, back in 1972, and a McLaren Vale red that has included Shiraz in every vintage since. Trott named it after one of the original vineyards, which runs next to the small Bethany Church, established in 1854.

Since the early 1980s, Church Block has been Cabernet led, today a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot. Two newer versions sit beside it in our range: a Church Block Shiraz, only the second single variety Church Block released, and a Church Block Grenache Shiraz that returns to the original blend of the 1970s.
