Philip Shaw Wines: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz from Orange

High on the slopes of Mount Canobolas, at around 900 metres, Philip Shaw grows cool climate wines on volcanic ground. The result is a range of hand crafted wines with elegance, intensity and clear varietal character.

Where Are Philip Shaw Wines Made?

Philip Shaw wines are made in Orange, New South Wales, with the Koomooloo vineyard at their heart. It was planted in 1989, and the winery counts it among the highest and coolest in Australia. The Boree Lane vineyard was added in 2020.

Most of Koomooloo sits on 12 million year old olivine basalt over deep limestone. Philip Shaw describes Orange as a region of high altitude, cool continental climate and rich volcanic soils, where the cool comes from continental conditions rather than latitude.

The man behind the label spent 12 years as a winemaker at Lindemans at Corowa, was head winemaker for Rosemount in the Hunter Valley and ran the winemaking for Southcorp Wines. The first commercial vintage from Koomooloo came in 2004.
