Organic Wine: Organically Grown Reds, Whites & Biodynamic Drops
Living soil, buzzing vineyards and grapes grown without synthetic sprays: organic wine starts long before the cellar door. Here you will find organic red wine, crisp organic white wine and a handful of biodynamic gems, from Australian growers and celebrated estates overseas.
What Is Organic Wine?
Organic wine is made from grapes grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers. Growers rely on compost, cover crops, natural predators and approved sprays such as copper and sulphur to keep their vines healthy.
In Australia, certified organic wines are audited by an approved certifier such as ACO Certification (Australian Certified Organic) or Southern Cross Certified, and may carry its logo on the label. Look for that logo, as a domestic label can say organic without certification.

Organic, Biodynamic or Natural: What's the Difference?
The short answer is how far each one goes. Organic covers the vineyard, with no synthetic chemicals, and also limits what may be added in the winery.
Biodynamic farming builds on organic practice, using preparations made from manure, herbs and minerals and a farming calendar that follows the moon. Several wines in our range come from biodynamic producers.
Natural wine has no legal definition in Australia. It usually means wild yeast, minimal intervention and little or no added sulphur, so a natural wine may or may not be certified organic.
Organic Red and White Wine in Our Range
Organic red wine makes up the larger part of the collection. Expect generous Shiraz and juicy Grenache from McLaren Vale, savoury Sangiovese from Chianti Classico and elegant Pinot Noir from New Zealand.
On the lighter side, organic white wine runs from zesty Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough to Chardonnay and Loire Valley classics. A few organic rosé and sparkling wines round things out for warmer days.
Australian Organic Wine
Australian organic wine is the heart of the collection, and South Australia leads the way. Look for Gemtree Wines, certified organic and biodynamic in McLaren Vale, and the easygoing Farm Hand wines from the Riverland.
In New South Wales, Tamburlaine Organic Wines farms its vineyards organically in the Hunter Valley and Orange. From overseas, we stock organic wines from France, Italy, New Zealand, Spain and Argentina.
How to Serve Organic Wine
Serve organic wine as you would any other bottle: fuller reds slightly cool at around 16 to 18 degrees, lighter reds a little cooler, and whites chilled, with fuller whites such as oaked Chardonnay a touch warmer. Once opened, keep the bottle in the fridge and enjoy it within a few days.
Organic Wine Questions, Answered
Does organic wine contain sulphites?
Yes, usually. Yeast creates a little sulphur dioxide during fermentation, and certified organic winemakers may add some as a preservative, within lower limits than conventional wine. For wines with nothing added, see our preservative free wine.
Is organic wine vegan?
Not always. Organic standards still allow fining with egg white or milk protein, so an organic wine is not automatically vegan. Many wines in this collection are both, and you will find more in our vegan wine range.
Is organic wine better for you?
Organic wine is still wine, so the usual advice about enjoying it in moderation applies. The difference lies in how the grapes are grown and how the wine is made, which matters to many drinkers for the sake of the vineyard and the environment.
