Mornington Peninsula Wines: Cool Climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris by the Sea
Sea breezes, rolling green hills and small, independent vineyards: the Mornington Peninsula is Melbourne's favourite wine escape. Its elegant Pinot Noir and fine Chardonnay are among Australia's most admired cool climate wines.
What Makes Mornington Peninsula Wine So Special?
The Mornington Peninsula lies about an hour south of Melbourne in Victoria, with water on three sides: Port Phillip Bay, Western Port and Bass Strait. The maritime climate keeps summers mild and gives the grapes a long, gentle ripening season.
Most vineyards are small and independently owned, and the modern industry only began in the early 1970s. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay make up most of our Mornington Peninsula wines, alongside Shiraz and Pinot Gris.
Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir
Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir is fragrant and silky, with red cherry, strawberry and gentle spice. Many producers bottle single vineyard wines that show the peninsula's different sites. Explore Pinot from other regions in our Pinot Noir collection.
Chardonnay and Pinot Gris
Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay is fine and textured, with citrus, white peach and a creamy, nutty finish. Discover more in our Chardonnay collection.
Mornington Peninsula Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio are another speciality. T'Gallant is widely credited with making the grape popular in Australia, and its Juliet Pinot Grigio remains a crisp, easy favourite.
For something pink or bubbly, Red Hill Estate makes a dry cool climate rosé and a sparkling cuvée, and T'Gallant adds a sparkling rosé.
Red Hill or Moorooduc?
Height makes the difference, even over a few kilometres. Red Hill and Main Ridge are higher and cooler, with red volcanic soils that give elegant, perfumed Pinot Noir and tight Chardonnay.
Lower and warmer Moorooduc and Tuerong in the north ripen earlier and give fuller wines, while Merricks and Balnarring lie towards Western Port.
Mornington Peninsula Wine Brands in Our Range
Paringa Estate is our largest Mornington Peninsula producer, known for single vineyard Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Kooyong adds a range of single vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and Red Hill Estate, T'Gallant and Stonier, one of the peninsula's pioneers and well known for its Pinot Noir, complete the lineup.
Serving and Food Pairing
Serve Chardonnay and Pinot Gris at 8 to 12 degrees and Pinot Noir slightly cool at 14 to 16 degrees. The whites are lovely with local mussels and fish, while Pinot Noir suits duck, mushrooms or seared salmon.
