Why Is Beechworth Famous for Chardonnay?

The short answer is granite and altitude. Beechworth Chardonnay is intense yet restrained, with grapefruit, white peach and a flinty, mineral finish, and the finest wines age for a decade or more.

From the late 1970s a handful of pioneering winemakers showed that the cool nights and poor granite soils here could produce Chardonnay to rival white Burgundy, and it has been the signature wine of the district ever since.

Beechworth Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Italian Varieties

Shiraz here is medium bodied and peppery, closer in style to the northern Rhône than to warmer South Australia. Pinot Noir is fine and savoury, with red cherry and earthy notes.

Italian grapes such as Nebbiolo and Sangiovese are increasingly planted here, with growing success.
