What Is German White Wine?

German white wine is white wine made across Germany's cool, northern vineyards, and it means Riesling above all. No country expresses the grape more purely.

Grown on dramatic slate and stone slopes along rivers like the Mosel and Rhine, German Riesling is light, low in alcohol and packed with racy acidity, orchard fruit and a mouth watering, mineral tension.

Most of it is dry these days, though styles range from bone dry to lusciously sweet.

Popular German White Wine Styles

Riesling is the heart and soul of our range. The Mosel makes feather light, delicate Rieslings of exquisite purity, all green apple, lime and wet stone, thanks to its steep slate vineyards.

Warmer regions like the Pfalz, Nahe and Rheinhessen give fuller, riper Rieslings with more body and stone fruit, often bone dry and beautifully structured.

You will also find a little Weissburgunder, Germany's name for Pinot Blanc, making soft, gently textured dry whites.

How to Serve German White Wine

Serve German Riesling well chilled, around 8 to 10 degrees, to keep all its zesty freshness. A standard white wine glass is all you need.

Riesling is famously long lived, so while most is delicious young, the finest bottles can age for a decade or more.

Food Pairing Ideas

Riesling is one of the most food friendly whites of all. Dry styles are a dream with seafood, pork and roast chicken, their acidity cutting cleanly through.

Off dry Riesling is the classic match for spicy Asian food, where a touch of sweetness tames the heat beautifully.

Is German Riesling Sweet or Dry?

It is the question everyone asks, and the answer is: both, but mostly dry. Germany makes Riesling across the whole sweetness spectrum, and today the majority is bone dry.

On the label, the word Trocken means dry, while terms like Kabinett and Spätlese describe riper grapes that can be dry or off dry. If you want a crisp, dry style, look for Trocken.

Sweeter Rieslings still exist and can be sublime, but the idea that all German wine is sweet is well and truly out of date.
