Veneto Wines: Prosecco, Soave, Valpolicella and Amarone from Italy's North East
Crisp Prosecco from around Treviso, almond scented Soave and rich Amarone from the vineyards around Verona: the Veneto makes more wine than any other region of Italy.
What Makes Veneto Wine So Special?
The Veneto stretches from Lake Garda in the west to Venice and the Adriatic coast in the east, with the Alps to the north. Most of its great wines come from the hills around Verona and Treviso.
Its fame rests on three very different styles: sparkling Prosecco, white Soave and the reds of Valpolicella, including Amarone made from dried grapes.
Sparkling wine makes up the largest share of our range from this wine region, followed by whites and reds, with a few rare sweet wines made from dried grapes.
Soave, Valpolicella or Prosecco?
The short answer is style and place. Soave is a dry white made mostly from Garganega on the hills east of Verona, while Valpolicella is a red blend led by Corvina from the valleys north of the city.
Prosecco comes from further east, where Glera grows on the plains of the Veneto and Friuli and, for Prosecco Superiore, on the hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene and around Asolo. So the name on the label tells you the style, the main grape and where the wine comes from.
Prosecco, Soave and Pinot Grigio
Our Prosecco runs from easy everyday Prosecco DOC to Prosecco Superiore DOCG from Valdobbiadene and Asolo, including Villa Sandi's Cartizze from the most prized slopes of the DOCG. Expect pear, apple and white flowers with fine, lively bubbles.
Soave wine is a gently textured white wine with almond, lemon and stone fruit, and the Classico wines come from the original hillside zone. Crisp Pinot Grigio delle Venezie completes the whites.
Valpolicella, Ripasso and Amarone
Valpolicella is made from Corvina, Rondinella and other local grapes. The everyday wines are bright and cherry fruited, a lovely red wine to serve slightly cool.
Amarone della Valpolicella is made from grapes dried for several months before pressing, giving a powerful, velvety red with dried cherry, chocolate and spice. Ripasso sits in between, refermented on the skins left over from Amarone or Recioto for extra depth.
The same drying method makes Recioto, a sweet wine, and La Biancara's Recioto di Gambellara from Garganega shows how long these wines can live.
Veneto Wine Brands in Our Range
Allegrini and Masi are two of the great family names of Valpolicella, from Allegrini's La Grola and Palazzo della Torre to Masi's Costasera Amarone and Campofiorin. Buglioni, Fattori, Pasqua, Prà and Monte Cillario add more reds.
For Soave and Garganega, look to Prà, Fattori and Anselmi, whose whites are labelled IGT Veneto rather than Soave. Our Prosecco comes from Nino Franco, Villa Sandi, Santa Margherita, Rebuli, La Gioiosa and Mionetto.
Serving and Food Pairing
Serve Prosecco and Soave well chilled, Valpolicella at around 15 degrees and Amarone at 16 to 18. Prosecco loves antipasti, Soave suits seafood risotto, and Amarone is superb with braised beef and aged cheeses.
What Is Veneto Wine Known For? Your Questions, Answered
What is Veneto wine known for?
Prosecco, Soave, Valpolicella and Amarone above all, along with Pinot Grigio. It is Italy's largest wine region by production and home to Venice and Verona.
What is a famous red wine from the Veneto?
Amarone della Valpolicella, a rich red made from dried grapes, is the most famous. Everyday Valpolicella and Ripasso are lighter and easier to drink young.
Is Prosecco only made in the Veneto?
No. Prosecco DOC also covers Friuli Venezia Giulia, but the Prosecco Superiore DOCG hills of Conegliano Valdobbiadene and Asolo lie entirely in the Veneto.
