Grenache: Juicy Barossa Reds, Classic GSM Blends and Provence Rosé

For decades Grenache did the quiet work. It filled out other people's blends, went into fortified wine, and rarely got its name on the label.

That has changed completely. Old Barossa and McLaren Vale vines are now making some of the most exciting reds in the country, all raspberry and warm spice and gentle grip, and the same grape turns out much of the pale, dry rosé you drink in summer.

What Is Grenache?

Grenache is a thin skinned red grape that ripens late and needs heat, which is why it thrives around the Mediterranean and across warm, dry parts of Australia. In Spain, where it most likely originated, it is called Garnacha.

The wines lean towards raspberry, red cherry and strawberry, with white pepper, dried herbs and an earthy edge underneath. Tannin is soft and the colour is often lighter than you expect, which fools people into thinking it will be light in flavour.

Most of this range sits in the medium to full range rather than at either extreme, so our medium bodied red wine collection is the natural neighbour.
