Central Otago Wines: Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay from New Zealand's South Island

Dark cherry, spice and a silky texture: Pinot Noir from Central Otago has put this mountain wine region in New Zealand's South Island on the world map in just a few decades.

What Makes Central Otago Wine So Special?

Central Otago lies inland in the south of the South Island, around Queenstown, Cromwell and Wānaka, surrounded by snow capped mountains. It is one of the most southerly wine regions in the world.

Unlike most New Zealand wine regions, it has a semi-continental climate: hot, dry summers, cold winters and big differences between day and night. The vines grow on schist and gravel soils, often on slopes above lakes and rivers.

Pinot Noir covers most of the vineyards, and red wine makes up more than half of our range from the region, almost all of it Pinot. Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Riesling and a little sparkling complete it.
