The Château Vannières Bandol Rouge 2020 is a relatively recent release from one of Bandol's top estates, and it reflects the characteristics of a warm vintage while showcasing the region’s hallmark style. The wine is primarily composed of Mourvèdre, the dominant grape in Bandol, with smaller amounts of Grenache and Cinsault rounding out the blend. The 2020 vintage is known for its sunny growing conditions, which resulted in ripe fruit balanced by enough freshness to give the wine vibrancy and aging potential.
Deep ruby red with purple highlights, reflecting the wine's youth and concentration. The wine appears vibrant and opaque, with a rich color typical of Mourvèdre-based wines.
The nose is aromatic and expressive, with a burst of ripe dark fruit such as blackberries, black cherries, and plums. There's a lovely interplay between the fruit and the earthy, savory notes of leather, tobacco, and dried herbs (rosemary and thyme), which are characteristic of Bandol’s Mediterranean climate. The influence of the oak is present but subtle, with hints of vanilla, spice, and a touch of smokiness that adds complexity without overwhelming the fruit. As the wine opens up, a slight floral lift (think of lavender or violet) emerges, adding elegance and a touch of freshness to the overall profile.
Full-bodied, with a strong, well-defined structure. The wine is dense and concentrated, with firm tannins that provide a solid backbone. The acidity is well-balanced, giving the wine a sense of freshness and keeping it from feeling too heavy.
Pairs well with rich, hearty dishes such as grilled meats (lamb, beef), stews, game (wild boar, venison), and Mediterranean cuisine (roasted vegetables, olives, and grilled fish). It also works well with mature cheeses like Manchego or aged cheddar.
