The Scottish-born Ryrie brothers planted the first vines here in 1838, Swiss-Italian immigrant Paul de Castella acquired the site in 1850, and the original winery building followed in 1859.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWines from the estate were awarded a Grand Prix at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1889.
